A crowded banquet scene in warm dark tones. A richly dressed king twists away from the table, eyes wide, as pale glowing characters appear on the wall above. Guests recoil; gold vessels catch the same cold light.

III · THE WORK · ART HISTORY

Belshazzar's Feast

Rembrandt · 1636 · Oil on canvas

At a royal feast in Babylon, gold plate gleams and a king recoils. Rembrandt freezes the instant sacred writing appears on the wall and the room tips into panic.
