Hokusai's wave was not painted once. It was carved in wood, inked, and printed — a different impression each time, none quite identical, all from the same set of blocks.

Mondrian's Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow

Mondrian moved strips of coloured tape around the canvas for months before committing to paint. The lines are different widths, the whites are not the same white, and nothing sits in the centre.
